Roof Types
Choosing the right roof style is the starting point for designing your metal workshop building. It’s important to consider the specific area you plan to locate your metal building structure and whether you can expect snow load, high wind or other harsh weather, or even the types of trees nearby and the debris they may drop. All our metal buildings include FREE delivery and assembly by one of our professional installation teams as long as the job site complies with requirements (see your local dealer for details).
Regular
A Regular roof style on your metal workshop can provide the protection you need for your equipment, materials and projects at an affordable price and in a variety of sizes. Rather than the building roof extending out to form an eave on the sides, the ends of each truss are curved downward, which provides additional height to your steel building without the cost of purchasing taller posts. Because the metal panels run gable-to-gable on the regular roof style, they are curved around the frame at the corners, providing additional coverage from the weather.
Boxed Eave
Boxed-eave (or “A-frame”) roof styles create a more traditional and attractive roof line for your metal workshop with only a modest increase in price. Like the Regular style, the metal panels run perpendicular to the roof slope, so they’re better for warmer and drier climates that don’t require maximum drainage due to harsh weather. Metal Buildings with a Boxed Eave roof also provide 4-6″ of overhang on the sides that are finished with boxed trim.
Vertical
A Vertical roof-style has the BEST long-term value and is ideal for protecting equipment and projects from weather elements. Along with having an attractive and traditional roof line with an eave, the metal panels and ribs run parallel to the slope, creating more efficient drainage and preventing snow load or debris build-up. Steel hat channel is utilized under the metal panels and adds strength to the structure. Vertical style roofs have 4-6″ of overhang and are finished with boxed trim on all sides. Vertical Roof design is the best investment to extend the life of your metal workshop roof.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A metal workshop
What will your metal workshop be used for?
A metal workshop can be built in a variety of sizes and shapes. Some metal workshops may need to utilized partly as a garage for parking vehicles or working on them. Other steel workshops may require a full insulated space that can be comfortable for working in during all seasons. Your plan for how you’ll utilize your shop will help determine the dimensions and customization options you need.
What type of equipment and machinery will you need space for?
Determine how much workspace is needed inside your metal workshop. When determining the dimensions and layout of your workshop, it’s helpful to consider the size and placement of machinery such as saws and drills, material storage space, plus space for the in-feed and out-feed of materials through saws. You may also want to consider whether your shop needs to be designed with different zones for different types of work, such as cutting, sanding, assembly, and painting or staining. Proper cross ventilation will not only help keep your space clean but will help avoid health hazards.
Which roof style should I choose?
Your metal roof style can make a big difference to the look and longevity of your metal workshop building. While that choice will affect the price, it’s very important to consider the weather in your area and the location on your property when choosing the metal building roof style.
Regular Roof
The regular roof style is an economical choice. However, because the panel ribs run gable-to-gable (end to end), the ribs can block natural drainage of rainwater or snow down the roof slope. It’s recommended that you purchase this style only if you live in an area that experiences minimal snowfall and in areas where tree debris and foliage won’t get trapped between the horizontal metal panel ribs.
Boxed Eave Roof
The boxed eave style roof has a A Frame Roof design like the vertical style, except the panels are installed horizontally. A boxed eave roof style will provide a similar your metal workshop building with a similar appearance as the Vertical roof style, but it’s less expensive. But due to the direction of the metal panels, the panel ribs can hinder drainage, so this roof style is best when there is no concern for snow load, heavy rainfall, or numerous nearby trees that will drop their foliage on the roof.
Vertical Roof
If you live in an area that experiences heavy rain or snowfall, it is recommended that you go with a vertical roof style metal garage. With a vertical roof style, the metal panels run from roof peak to the edge, so the panel ribs run parallel to the roof slope, encouraging drainage. This prevents snow as well as leaves and debris from nearby trees from getting trapped on the roof. Vertical Roof design is the best investment to extend the life of your steel workshop roof.
Where are you installing your metal workshop building?
Before the installation process, MaxSteel will ask you to provide photos of the metal workshop location to ensure that the site is level and to address any other job site concerns. If the steel building will be located on un-level ground or does not meet job site requirements, additional onsite charges may apply to ensure that the structure is level and safe. If we are installing your metal workshop on concrete, it must be level and square from corner to corner. We also recommend that the pad be 1 foot shorter than the roof length (i.e., 25′ for a 26′ roof length) due to the 6″ overhang on each end. Our installers will also need room to assemble the metal workshop safely.
Do local building regulations require your metal workshop building design plans to be certified?
Depending on your area, local building regulations may require that your metal structure is certified to handle a specific amount of snow load or wind load. Contact your local building department to determine if this applies to you before purchasing your new metal workshop. If your local government does require certification, contact a local MaxSteel Buildings dealer for more information and assistance with your metal workshop design.
What features would you like to add to your metal workshop plans?
Once you’ve determined the size and roof style that’s best for your new metal building, it’s time to think about the customizations you need. Below are some customization options to consider for your new metal workshop:
Colors
The roof, trim, and sides on all our metal buildings are available in a variety of colors. We offer nineteen color options to customize the look of your new steel garage. Fourteen of those colors are standard options that add no extra cost to your garage price. The remaining five are premium colors that come with an extended warranty and color-matching screws if chosen. That said, any color can be upgraded to premium to achieve the extended warranty and matching screws.
Garage Doors
MaxSteel can install a variety of roll-up garage door sizes, from 6’W x6’H up to 12’W x 14’H. They can be put on the ends or on the sides with a small added charge. It all depends on how you want the steel building to orient on your property and which way the openings should face. Depending on sizes and color needed, some roll-up door options are available in colors other than white.
Frame-outs
MaxSteel can build your steel workshop with the required frame-out sizes to automatic doors available at home improvement stores. Just be sure to provide the correct rough opening size needed for your chosen door size.
Walk-in Doors & Windows
You may not want to roll-up the garage door each and every time you need to enter your metal workshop building, so including a walk-in door provides a convenient option for entrance and egress. You may also want to consider adding windows in key locations in order to allow natural light to enter your metal workshop space.
Insulation and Condensation Barriers
Insulation and drip-stop can be important features to add and can make your metal workshop building more comfortable to work in or can prevent condensation from dripping on your valuables as outside vs. inside temperatures shift.
Does your metal workshop building need additional strength or support?
Upgrade to 12-gauge steel
One way to add strength or support is by upgrading to 12-gauge steel. The standard steel gauge used for all metal garages is 14-gauge, which measures 2 ½” x 2 ½”. If you would like to upgrade to a steel building frame with a higher strength that can better support high snow and wind loads, then a 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” 12-gauge steel frame would be recommended. 12 gauge is a thicker frame (steel tubing).
Additional Bows and Trusses
Bows and Trusses are structural supports that fit under the roof panels of metal workshop buildings and provide support and stability. You should consider additional supports for your metal workshop design if you live in an area with heavy snow or other intense weather.
Anchor types
The anchor used during installation will depend on the foundation type in which you plan to anchor the metal building. If you feel that additional strength or support may be needed, contact one of our friendly building specialists for more information.
How much do metal workshop buildings cost?
The cost of a metal workshop building starts at $3,420 based on the structure and area of installation, but metal garage prices vary based on sizes, roof styles, and customization options. MaxSteel metal buildings include delivery and installation.
How do I get some metal building design advice and place my order?

Before the scheduled date of your metal building installation, you need to make sure the ground is level, the foundation is set, the area is cleared of debris and the crew has room to work around the building.
